Awareness on Prize Scam

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Prize ScamAnother way of scam is the prize scam. The prize scam is slightly related to the cheque cashing scam and money laundering scam. Their usual tactics is that someone will contact you from the company, telling you that you’ve won a prize. The bad news is that you really haven’t won a prize at all, but they are going to take away up to thousands of dollars from you using this type of scam.

Typically, the prize scam scenarios go like the following:

  • A business or someone else will tell you that you’ve won a prize, congratulate you and act like it’s a really huge deal.
  • Afterward, the business or person will tell you that to claim your prize; you will need to send them tax money for the prize. For example, they may ask a thousand dollars for $100,000 worth or prize money. Or they may even say that you’ve won a million dollars and ask for $10,000 worth of taxes. They’ll then tell you not to worry because you’ll be getting the money back, plus the actual cash prize.
  • You’ll produce the money and send it to the business or person.
  • They will collect the money and then disappear. The prize money will never arrive.

If a business or individual contacts you in this manner, it’s better to inform the local authorities than trust them because they’re more likely than not a part of the prize scam.

Prize scams aren’t the only abundant scams around; learn more about paid survey scams so you can protect yourself and keep your well-earned money safe.

Have You Heard of Affiliate Marketing?

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Paid Survey ScamHave you ever heard of the term “affiliate marketing“?

After registering to a paid survey company, you might have been asked more than once to sign up with “partner sites” or offers. You might have wondered, why do paid survey companies do that? Well, here’s the answer: they do it to indirectly get more money off of you.

An owner of a website can sign up to be a partner of any other website. After this, they try to advertise the website to you. If you click the link to get to that second website, the first website is most likely making money thanks to you.

But they don’t always make money when you click the ads sometimes, they can only get paid when you sign up on the second website. Other times, they can make money both from your click and from signing up on the second website, except signing up would make them earn more. A site may get paid for each and every click you make on the second website, or they may only get paid when you sign up with the second website. You’ll never find the specific details just by doing some clicking here and there, but you at least need to be aware that there’s this type of thing going on, and not just with paid survey websites.

So is this kind of arrangement a bad thing? Not necessarily. This is how many sites earn their money and then share a percentage of commission with you. Affiliate marketing has also been around for years. Even companies like banks, insurance, and small-time retail stores engage in affiliate marketing here and there.

Unfortunately, though, there are some affiliate marketers who will take advantage of this arrangement to promote less legitimate companies. They are usually the ones to blame for those survey companies that don’t really have surveys. When you sign up with them, they will direct you to other survey companies, and each company you sign up with will make them more money. These survey companies may or may not have paid surveys for you, and you would most likely just waste your time signing up for survey companies and not really being able to actually take surveys.

This is one of the reasons why we must always research about the company offering on line surveys for cash before signing up for them. Because although affiliate marketing isn’t bad in itself, there will always be people who will abuse this kind of system.

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Paid survey scamsPaid survey scams are out there, and though we want to make money from paid surveys, we should also remember to be careful so that we can avoid getting scammed.

Here is the first set of questions about scams that are so rampant around now.

Question: Exactly what kinds of scams are out there?
Answer: There are several kinds of scams from scam companies. They usually:

  • take your information and sell them to other companies
  • sell you items that have nothing to do with making money
  • ask you to pay for a list of companies that offer paid surveys (although this isn’t exactly a scam, you can still easily find this information on the internet)

Question: How do you spot a scam?
Answer:
Some hints that a company might be  scams are when they:

  • make promises of making you rich or getting you thousands of dollars per week
  • offer other things that seem too good to be true
  • ask you for money

At the last point, although there are legitimate companies that ask for fees, you should still be careful because fake companies only provide you with information you can find free elsewhere.

Question: How do I avoid getting scammed?
Answer: Here are some tips to avoid getting scammed:

  • Do a simple search on your preferred search engine to help you find reviews about the survey companies you’re considering joining.
  • Find out who the owner of a domain/website is by doing a simple search on whois.com.au. If you’ve heard bad things about the owner then it’s best not to join the survey site.
  • Make sure that you go to forums or review websites to read more about the survey company.

Paid Survey Scams

Paid survey scams Its a sad fact but the Internet is home to hundreds and thousands of scams, including paid survey scams. I have been involved with the o industry for over 5 years now and I have seen the paid survey scams and scammers get more creative and smarter to rip off the unsuspecting consumer.

In all honesty, I still find it hard sometimes to figure out if a site is legitimate or a scam site. Scams don’t only exist in the paid survey and market research industry and are in fact hidden in every corner of the Internet.

Some scams include:

  • Auction and shopping scams
  • Domain renewal scams
  • Free offer scams
  • Spam and junk mail scams
  • spyware scams
  • Business opportunity scams
  • Get rich quick scams
  • Weight loss scams
  • Banking scams

The list goes on and on. If you are considering joining a new paid survey site and think that it may be a scam site make sure you do your research. Google the sites name and type in words such as scam and review the results. If you are still unsure do not join the site, its better to be safe than sorry.

If you have been scammed or you need additional information you can visit Scam Watch which is a Australian government website. They have also produced a free book that I think everyone should read. Its called the Little Black  Book of Scams.
