Why save your receipts when going mystery shopping?

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Mystery shoppingWe briefly mentioned in our last mystery shopping entry that companies that hire you as their mystery shopper reimburse you for the costs of your mystery shopping (for example, reimbursement for food at a restaurant or hotel that you need to review). But there’s one very important thing you need to remember as a mystery shopper if you want to get back the money you spent for a review: always, always save your receipts!

Without the receipt, the mystery shopping company won’t reimburse you. You will need to either take a photo of the receipt, scan it, or fax it to the company. You will be required to save your receipt for around six months to a year.

Aside from being reimbursed, the receipt will also show you the following information that’s important to your shopper report:

  • Business name
  • Address
  • Date and time of purchase
  • Amount you spent
  • Name of person who served or waited on you
  • What you purchased
  • Transaction number

It would be difficult to remember these information if you don’t have it on paper, plus if it’s your first time going mystery shopping, you might be so nervous that you forget the important details.

If you aren’t given a receipt, ask for it! If you don’t have a receipt, you won’t be able to get paid, and you’ll have wasted time and money. If they can’t give you a receipt for some reason, you can ask for a handwritten receipt and say that it’s for work (but don’t reveal that you’re a mystery shopper!). While writing your report you would then have to mention that an electronic receipt wasn’t available, so you asked for a handwritten receipt instead.

Have You Heard of Mystery Shopping?Thinking of trying your hand at mystery shopping? It’s always good to get a few pointers on how to do mystery shopping so that you can be successful in your endeavor. So why say no to useful tips?

Here are some pointers on how to do mystery shopping:

  • Remember to print out your instructions and read them thoroughly before entering the shop
  • Park beside the building. If you park at the front, employees might spot you reading or filling out paperwork from the business windows.
  • Stay calm and act normal. Remember, no one knows you’re a mystery shopper!
  • Dress the part! For example, dress like a student if you’re shopping at a college campus, or a business casual attire if you’re shopping at a place that sells suits.
  • Never take the paperwork with you to the shop. It’s a dead giveaway that you’re a mystery shopper.
  • Remember to take note of your arrival time, departure time, and how long it took you to be served/greeted/helped. Time is important.
  • Ask for an itemised receipt and immediately put it in a safe place. Receipts are really important as you need them to get paid and reimbursed in mystery shopping.
  • Read the nametag of the employee assisting you. One tip to make you remember their name is if you try to call them by their name.
  • Fill out your reports honestly and completely. Some companies have surveillance video, which they might use to verify if your claims are truthful.
  • Friends are not allowed! So don’t bring a person with you when you go mystery shopping, unless of course the company says it’s okay.
  • Sometimes, a report can contain a question that does not apply to you. This is a way to test if you’re being honest and accurate.
  • Falsifying information will ruin your credibility, and will most likely end your career as a mystery shopper. Don’t do it!
  • After you shop in a certain location, you need to wait for months or even a year before you’re allowed to shop in that same location again.
  • You’ll be required to fill in your report within a few hours after you’ve completed your mystery shopping.
  • Only one person can complete each shop. That’s why, if you immediately have your friends sign up for the same companies you’re shopping for, they may end up taking the high paying jobs, leaving you empty-handed.
  • Unless it’s required, never reveal your identity as a mystery shopper. The company will know if you’ve revealed yourself and may not accept your services in the future.

We hope these tips on how to do mystery shopping have proven useful to you.

Mystery shopping: Where to start?

Mystery shoppingMystery shopping doesn’t only require awesome computer skills; you would also need the following:

  • Computer
  • Printer
  • Digital camera
  • Wristwatch/stopwatch that can track both minutes and seconds
  • Scanner
  • Access to a fax machine
  • Scratch paper for notes
  • Ink pens
  • Vehicle
  • Money to make a purchase

But where do you find mystery shopping companies?

You can basically follow the same tips in searching the net for genuine paid surveys. Sign up with every reputable company you can find, as each company will have different services and clients.

Keep in mind that there are some companies that only want professionally trained, experienced mystery shoppers, but don’t be discouraged. There are also other companies that are willing to give new people a chance to go mystery shopping.

I found a company I would like to join! How do I sign up?

The sign-up process can be a little bit difficult from a paid survey free registration. The company may ask some or all of the following:

  • Personal information (including height and weight)
  • Work history
  • References

They may also give you a trial or mock mystery shop, which you are to review and write about. This may include a video or photo, and can have questions about the cleanliness, staff uniforms, and many others. It’s important to stay alert and be observant of details so that you’re able to answer the questions the company will ask you about the mock mystery shop later on. Also remember that they can also judge you based on your writing style, grammar, spelling, and aptitude for writing reviews.

How and how much do I get paid?

Most companies would pay $10 for one company review, and will reimburse the costs you spend for that review. For example, if you’re required to review a restaurant, they’ll reimburse you for the food you’ve eaten.

Although you usually do start out with a low pay, especially if you’re a beginner mystery shopper, but once you prove that you’re indispensable they’ll start giving you higher-paying jobs. You’ll also get a bigger commission if the area you’re designated with has few mystery shoppers assigned.

Reimbursements for mystery shopping will be discussed in further detail in our next entry, so please check back!

Have You Heard of Mystery Shopping? When you hear the word “mystery shopping“, what first comes into mind?

For those unfamiliar with mystery shopping, this is a tool used by a company to measure their products and services. It uses the help of a person they hired to try out the product or service in secret. It’s a simple job that pays! Not only that, but a lot of perks come along with this kind of job, such as a free merchandise, stays in a hotel, or meals.

This kind of job is all about the details. You may be asked to evaluate the food of a certain restaurant, or the service of a hotel. You need to try to experience how it’s like to be a regular customer at that certain establishment, and fill in a report for the company afterwards. Since the staff at the establishment don’t know you’ve been hired by the company to evaluate them, your input is the closest possible feedback of one of their normal customers.

In mystery shopping, you must always have to make a purchase, but you will always be fully reimbursed for that.

Next time, we’ll go further into the details of mystery shopping so stay tune for more updates.

Mystery shopping’s mystery audit

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Mystery auditOccasionally, as a mystery shopper you would need to reveal themselves to the shop. Other times, you might be sent out on a mystery audit. A mystery audit or mystery shop audit is hugely different from the usual mystery shop job for the following reasons:

  • You are required to call the business ahead of time and inform them of your coming
  • You need to check the store. For example, make sure brochures are current and well stocked or whether the sale signs displayed around a store are correct
  • Most of the time you will have the manager with you during your audit, to assist you in finding the areas you need to audit.

The mystery audit or mystery shop audit requires a lot of recording and attention to detail.

When a mystery shopper reveals theirself

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

A mystery shopperAside from some things you need before you can start mystery shopping, you should also know that there are some shops that will require a mystery shopper to reveal himself or herself.

Why does this need to be done? Because sometimes, the mystery company will require a mystery shopper to hand out a prize to that branch if the shop manages to do the required processes correctly. The mystery prize can be anything from a pre-paid Mastercard to a gift card.

For example, one mystery shopper was required to buy popcorn from a popcorn stand of that company:

  • The mystery shopper’s line (as dictated by the mystery company): “I’d like a popcorn please”
  • What the mystery shopper should check: That the employee would respond with, “Would you like a large” or “Would you like to make it a combo and get a drink too?”
  • If the employee answered it this way, then the mystery shopper would agree to make it a large or make it a combo and get a drink.

Afterwards, the mystery shopper would ask for a manager and then reveal that he or she is a mystery shopper, and either:

  • Give out the prize and ask the manager to complete a form (if the employee responded correctly), or;
  • Ask a manager to complete a form if the employee didn’t respond correctly

Some people choose not to accept this kind of mystery shopping because it would become a rather uncomfortable situation should the shop be unsuccessful.

If a shop is unsuccessful, the mystery shopper should return the prize to the company.
